How to get over a creative block
Creativity is the sauce! It’s what separates the wheat from the chaff. It turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. Regardless of ones area of expertise, achieving our goals heavily depends on our creative prowess. However, inspiration is sometimes elusive and a creative block is the thorn in the foot of most creatives. So how does one overcome a creative block?
Write down all that come to mind during your creative block even if they are related to the task at hand. Doing this will create more space in your brain for new ideas to flow in. Remember the creative process is a journey. Write your ideas down and continue to build on them with different layers.
Being fully present is becoming more challenging as technology advances. Sometimes for the creative juices to flow freely, we need to get rid of all the distractions and clutter. Mindfulness enhances focus and clarity.
3. Get rid of the box
Practice being random. It’s important to remember that creativity is a muscle. Therefore, it needs constant exercise. Practice finding connections between 2 completely unrelated subjects, you just may surprise yourself!
4. Take a break
“Inspiration is intangible, you can’t do it on purpose” Ted Trochut. Being under pressure to be creative can mess with your creative flow. Take a break, work on something different, do something fun to take your mind off your task. Inspiration will probably strike when you least expect it.
5. Change your environment
A change of scenery will do a lot for you. Our line of thinking is sometimes limited by our environment. Acting on it, will definitely expand your perspective as your brain is being stimulated in a different way. This is why at BaseCamp we offer the option to work indoors, outdoors or on the rooftop!
Put yourself in someone else shoes to adopt their perspective.
7. Limit your options
This sounds like the opposite of thinking outside the box right? However, it isn’t. Choice paralysis is a real thing. Sometimes having too many options can work against you. Think about the twitter model. One is required to express themselves in exactly 140 characters. Which results in creative ways of putting a message out.
“Creativity is not just about art - it is one of the most crucial human traits. It lies at the heart of innovation, thus it is not a superficial skill but a necessity for human survival.” Balder Onarhein
